RuPaul's Drag Race has been on the air for over a decade, and in that time, we've seen some truly ICONIC hairstyles grace the runway. From towering wigs to sleek bobs, these looks have not only pushed the boundaries of drag beauty, but have also become cultural touchstones for the LGBTQ+ community and beyond.

From the costumes to the jewellery to the utterly FLAWLESS makeup, the show is a feast for the eyes, but perhaps the most striking aspect of drag race is the hair (in LACAS opinion - might we add) The wigs worn by the drag queens on the show are not only a key part of their drag persona but also an important aspect of the art of drag, I mean a queen without a wig is like .. us without our collaborators, it just doesn't work.
Many of the wigs worn on the show are made by the drag queens themselves, while others are made by professional wig makers.
Some of the most notable wig makers on RuPaul's Drag Race include:
Mathu Andersen, who has been the head makeup artist for the show since its inception and also creates wigs for many of the drag queens on the show
Casey Dacanay, who has worked on the show since season 4 and has created wigs for many of the show's most iconic looks, including Sharon Needles' spooky gothic-inspired wigs
Jasmine Rice LaBeija, who has worked on the show since season 6 and has created wigs for a number of the show's most popular drag queens, including Trinity K. Bonet's wavy bob.
Wigs And Grace 💖
One of the most influential hairstyles from the show's early years was Bebe Zahara Benet's bald head. Bebe, the winner of the first season of Drag Race, shaved her head for the show and it was a bold move that paid off. Her bald head, combined with her fierce runway looks and stunning African-inspired costumes, made a huge impact on the series and helped pave the way for future drag queens to experiment with unconventional beauty looks. How can you not love " Bald Bebe" it was without a doubt the shows first MAJOR ICONIC moment and ohhhhhh did we revel in it...
It would be blasphemous to not mention Sharon Needles' spooky, gothic-inspired looks. Sharon, the winner of season four, was known for her dark and eerie aesthetic, which was reflected in her hair and makeup. She often wore black wigs with blunt bangs and dramatic eye makeup, and her looks were a huge influence on the drag scene, honeys she slayedddddd...
Bob the Drag Queen's short bob hairstyle has become one of the most recognizable looks from the show. Bob, the winner of season eight, often wore a sleek, short bob wig that was a modern take on a classic drag hairstyle. Her bob was a stark contrast to the towering wigs worn by many other contestants and helped to redefine what a "drag hairstyle" could be.
THE most influential hairstyle from All-Star show is Trinity Taylor's extravagant wigs. Trinity, the winner of All-Star season 3, was known for her big wigs, and she always pushed the boundaries with her hair. She often wore wigs that were tall, colorful, and sometimes even included a built-in crown. Trinity's hair was always a statement, and her influence is still seen on the drag scene today.
RuPaul's Drag Race has been home to some truly iconic hairstyles over the years.
